Program Content

The following section of Program Content features curricula from six successful Population Council projects. Varying in the context for which they were originally created, each of this curriculum covers a range of subjects from financial literacy, nutrition, health, and education. Each curriculum is highly adaptable and some are available in multiple languages. We encourage you to explore each carefully and see what can be deployed to your communities.

Abriendo Oportunidades (AO) Program: Integrated Curriculum Guide

The Abriendo Oportunidades program’s purpose is to strengthen adolescent girls’ safe transition to adolescence and increase their school promotion and retention. This curriculum contains tools and exercises for sessions with girls and mentors based on three transversal axes: human rights, gender perspective, and interculturality. Work shows that adolescent girls participating in AO stay in school, lose their fear of participating, increase their self-esteem, learn new skills and develop a network of community support.

Adolescent Girls Education Program (AGEP) Dream Big! Kwacha for Our Future Curriculum

The Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) in rural and urban Zambia aims to build social, health, and economic assets of adolescent girls through a safe spaces approach. This collection of learning sessions is designed to prepare adolescent girls and young women for the financial responsibilities of adulthood, providing them with the knowledge and skills to transition from economic dependence to independence.  Skills include building a savings plan, knowing the difference between safe and unsafe work, and more. 

Adolescent Girls Education Program (AGEP) Health and Life Skills Curriculum

The Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) in rural and urban Zambia aims to build social, health, and economic assets of adolescent girls through a safe spaces approach. This curriculum aimed to increase adolescent girls’ knowledge of reproductive health and sexuality; reinforce and promote attitudes and behaviors that will lead to a better quality of life for adolescent girls; and instill skills among adolescents to enable them to overcome the challenges of growing up and becoming responsible adults.

Adolescent Girls Education Program (AGEP) Nutrition Education Curriculum

The Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) in rural and urban Zambia aims to build social, health, and economic assets of adolescent girls using a safe spaces approach. This collection is focused on nutrition and sessions are: nutrition needs for adolescent girls, the role of food in the body, anemia, nutrition for pregnant adolescents, infant feeding from birth through six months, and young child feeding and growth monitoring. The activities are critical in building social assets for vulnerable girls.

Curriculum on Adolescent-Friendly Health Services and Health Voucher Mechanisms

The Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) in rural and urban Zambia aims to build social, health, and economic assets of adolescent girls using a safe spaces approach. This collection addresses the health voucher component of AGEP. Adolescents face many barriers in obtaining the health services and commodities they need. This curriculum should be used by trained facilitators who wish to provide a standard to all health providers for the delivery of adolescent-friendly services.

Adolescent Girls Initiative - Kenya (AGI-K) Dream Big! Shillings for Our Future Curriculum

The Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya (AGI-K) builds the social, health, and economic assets of adolescent girls in Kenya. This collection of learning sessions was designed to prepare adolescent girls for the financial responsibilities of adulthood. The sessions were developed to be delivered without a lot of resources or materials. The guide contains step-by-step descriptions of the learning activities as well as background information. The curriculum provided is for peri-urban (Kibera) and rural (Wajir) girls respectively.

Adolescent Girls Initiative - Kenya (AGI-K) Health and Life Skills Curriculum

The Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya (AGI-K) builds the social, health, and economic assets of adolescent girls in Kenya. This collection of learning sessions was designed to increase adolescent girls’ knowledge of reproductive health and sexuality; reinforce and promote attitudes and behaviors that will lead to a better quality of life; and instill skills to enable girls to overcome the challenges of growing up and becoming responsible. The curriculum provided is for peri-urban (Kibera) and rural (Wajir) girls respectively.

GirlsRead! Girls' Rights: An Empowerment Curriculum

Created through the GirlsRead! project, this curriculum’s overall goal is to increase progression to secondary school and improve school retention by bolstering girls’ learning outcomes, furthering social connections, improving critical thinking skills, and fostering community norms supportive of girls’ schooling. Originally implemented in Zambia, the first half of the safe spaces program is supported by this curriculum to increase girls’ knowledge of topics such as health and gender and reinforce positive behaviors and skills.

GirlsRead! E-Reader Curriculum

Created on behalf of the GirlsRead! project, this curriculum’s overall goal is to increase progression to secondary school and improve school retention by bolstering girls’ learning outcomes, furthering social connections, improving critical thinking skills, and fostering community norms supportive of girls’ schooling. Originally implemented in Zambia, the second half of the safe spaces program is supported by this curriculum whereby mentors guide girls in the use of e-readers to build reading skills and foster a joy for reading.

It's All One Curriculum

The It’s All One Curriculum, as part of the Rethinking Sexuality Education project, provides a rationale, content, and sample activities for placing gender and rights at the center of sexuality and HIV curricula—both as stand-alone modules and integrated with topics such as relationships, puberty, and condom use. The two-book, user-friendly curriculum details how sexuality education takes place in a variety of cultural and political contexts in its first half, while the second guides educators on how to adapt the material to their context.

Young Women: Your Future, Your Money Workbooks

These workbooks were created under the Population Council’s Safe and Smart Savings project, a program to help girls’ build assets, support networks, and savings. The program combined weekly group meetings facilitated by a mentor, financial education, health and life skills education, and formal individual savings accounts. The workbooks were designed to help young girls learn how to save money and gain financial literacy. They were made for both Uganda and Kenya respectively as well as two age cohorts, 10-14 and 15-19.
