The Abriendo Oportunidades program was launched in 2004 as a project focused on adolescent girls, with the purpose of strengthening their safe transition to adolescence and increasing their school promotion and retention. Based on evidence, the Population Council designed the following curricular guides that contain tools and exercises for sessions with girls and mentors based on three transversal axes: human rights, gender perspective, and interculturality and relevance. A specific guide for boy groups has also been developed.
More than a decade of work shows that adolescent girls participating in Abriendo Oportunidades stay in school, lose their fear of participating, increase their self-esteem, learn new skills and develop a network of community support.
